Lynches River County park is a nature lovers dream! Formerly Lynches River State Park, this 684-acre park has habitats of swampy lowland with cypress and water tupelo as well as dry oak and pine woods. Though convenient and free I have generally found it peaceful and quiet. No admission is charged for the park but fees apply for swimming and wall climbing. . Click here for the official site. Directions: Take Route 52 south 12 miles. After crossing the Lynches River take a right on Old No. 4 for two miles and then right again onto the park road. Picnic tables by the pool sit on a turkey oak/long-leaf pine, xeric ridge. Sparkleberry trees line the trail in a wet area at the beginning and a boardwalk winds along this black water river. There's considerable elevation change from the ridge to the water. You can walk past a gate on the old paved road to the area where the land drops down to the river at the site of an old bridge. There are two attractive new cabins for rent. |
