The Santee National Wildlife Refuge includes 15,000 acres and is a major
wintering area for ducks, geese and swans. It provides a nesting and stopover
area for neo-tropical migratory birds, raptors, shorebirds and wading birds.
Endangered/threatened species include bald eagle, peregrine falcon, and wood
stork. Numerous other species of wildlife indigenous to this area also live here
The Cuddo Unit features a 6-mile wildlife drive that affords visitors easy
access to several good wildlife observation areas. Two hiking trails are a
mountain bike trail beckon the more active observer.
Officially the refuge is open 8 to 5 October thru February and 7 to 7 April
thru September. The visitors drive is closed EVERY Saturday. We were there once
on a Sunday and found the gate closed so before making a special trip you might
try calling 803-478-2217
From Exit 115 on I-95 between Summerton and Manning, drive southwest on US
301 (Toward Summerton) for 1.1 miles and turn left onto Clarendon County
S-14-14. Drive 3.3 miles to Davis Station Crossroad, turn right then left onto
S-14-64. Drive 4.9 miles and turn right onto S-14-260. The entrance to the
refuge is approximately 2.0 miles on the right.
