The Santee Coastal Reserve is a treasure located a few miles south of Gerogetown. For directions and hours visit the SCtrails site. Beware that the preserve has strange days of opening. It sometimes closes for hunting and sometimes to protect nesting birds. It includes a 6.5 mile hike/bike trail that follows levees through old rice fields full of wading birds and alligators.
