John Ramsburgh |
John recently joined the Sierra
Club of South Carolina as Chapter Director. He spent part of his time
growing up camping and hunting on his family's farm in Darlington, and has
conservation friends and family throughout South Carolina. He has also
been active in statewide efforts to stop the Santee Cooper coal plant
proposal for the Pee Dee river, and to promote a clean, renewable energy
future for our state. John will be talking about the state chapter's
current conservation and legislative priorities. He will also solicit
comments about the Pee Dee Group's hopes and goals for the Sierra Club.
Please bring your questions and ideas for what promises to be a fun and
informative discussion! |

Blan Holman of the Southern Environmental Law
Center |
His presentation will discuss Santee Cooper's
proposed coal-fired power plant on the Great Pee Dee River. Holman will
describe how local opposition to the plant fits with the legal strategy
being implemented to force the evaluation of cleaner and less expensive
options for meeting the region's energy needs. A Senior Attorney at SELC,
Holman has litigated numerous precedent-setting cases at the federal and
state level. |

Doug DeNeve |
Giant Panda Topic of Sierra Club
Meeting
On Thursday, November 1, Doug DeNeve will present a program on giant
pandas, their status and conservation, and the programs underway in China
to save the species from extinction. Doug and his wife Pam migrated south
from Winston-Salem in 2005, landing in Hartsville. Both are avid birders
and lovers of the natural world, and Doug is a "serious amateur"
photographer. They joined the Sierra Club —Pee
Dee Group about a year ago, and have been active members since. While
perusing a Sierra magazine earlier this year, Pam spotted a volunteer
opportunity at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant
Panda, in Wolong, China. When she saw the opportunity included getting
into an enclosure with baby pandas, all other vacation plans were
immediately shelved! Those who attend can expect to see lots of great
pictures! |
